Ce qui reste du château de Faro fait partie d'une structure défensive de la ville, qui doit avoir une origine romaine et qui a ensuite été renforcée par les Arabes. Le château semble avoir été construit, après la reconquête chrétienne de la péninsule, sur l'Alcáçova d'origine musulmane.
En 1596, Faro est attaquée par les forces anglaises. Elle est pillée et incendiée. Elle doit être reconstruite sur plusieurs années et, dès le XVIIe siècle, de nombreux travaux adaptent le château et les murs de la ville. d'artillerie.
Au 18ème siècle, le château était le siège du régiment d'artillerie du royaume de l'Algarve et à la fin du 19ème siècle, il fut loué à une société qui le transforma en une fabrique d'alcool.
Les modifications apportées, pour fonctionner comme une usine, ont grandement altéré le château, qui a également été victime de l'ouverture d'une rue à travers les murs, l'actuelle Rua do Castelo.
